The Facts You Need To Know About Termites

By Scott Davis

When people think about Termites they often think they are ants - but the two species comes from different families in the insect world. Termites have been around millions of years and can eat their way through wooden houses but they are actually quite delicate insects.

Nests are either above ground or below ground. Those nests above ground are usually mounds or built in trees or on poles. Those below ground consist of a series of tunnels and can also be located under tree stumps.

The nests themselves need to have very high levels of humidity as the worker termites are very thin skinned and will easily dry out and die. They also need to maintain a high temperature and it is usually between 25 or 30 degrees inside the nest.

People thinking about termites often think their only diet is wood but there a many species out there that eat other organic matters. The termite digestive system is advanced as it can easily break down woody cellulose into more useful sugar.

A colony is made up of termites fitting into a strict social structure. The one Queen who can live for more than twenty years producing new eggs. The single king has a role to fertilize the eggs and to help bring up the children. The thin skinned worker termites gather food and do nest maintenance but seldom leave the nest. This is due to their thin skin and the need for a humid environment. The colony is protected by a class of Soldier termites equipped with fighting equipment. And there are also Reproducers. This class matures through to having wings. In spring or fall when temperatures are warm and humid they can fly away to start a new nest.

Colonizing Flights are done by the reproducer class and usually occur before and after winter when there is warm humid weather. When a new site is found the new King and Queen lose their wings and the Queen begins laying eggs. Initially they both look after the offspring in the new colony but as it grows the social structure comes into being and the Queen concentrates on laying eggs. A colony can have from several hundred to several million termites.

A tough thing about termites is that an infestation in a wooden home may show no signs until even five years after the termites have moved in. - 30195

How To Get Rid of Fleas From Your Home Naturally

By Deegan Love

Introduction: Don't blame Fido for the fleas! Sure, he may have brought it inside the house, but it isn't all his fault. The best thing for you to do right now is just to start disinfecting your home in order to get rid of those pesky fleas. Here are some ways for you to eliminate them of them naturally.

Difficulty: 4

Things You'll Need: small dishes or bowls, tea candles, dishwashing liquid, common house cleaning materials

Step 1. The first thing that you should do is to treat Fido for fleas. This is the most important part. Your pet is the main vehicle for the fleas to get inside your home, so your eradicating attempts have to start there.

Step 2 . After getting rid of all the fleas on your pet, you can continue with the de - infestation efforts at home. It is very important to do the two procedures simultaneously or right after you finish the first. This is so as to avoid the re infestation from your house to your already flea - free pet.

Step 3. In cleaning your house, start with the surfaces as to where your pet usually hangs out on. This can be the basement floor, his little basket or the foyer rugs. Clean, wash, scrub and dry all of those.

Step 4. After scrubbing and cleaning the parts of the house where your dog or cat usually stays in, vacuum the other parts of the house. Pay attention to places with a lot of fabric like living room carpets, sofas, rugs, curtains and the like. Include nooks, crevices and crannies as well.

Step 5. To eliminate fleas that haven't been eradicated by your extrerminating efforts, take out your small bowls or dishes, and pour some liquid dishwashing soap that's been diluted with water. Place the candles right in the middle of the bowl, and place the bowls all over your house. Light the candles and leave them for awhile. The fleas will be mesmerized by the light, and will fall straight into the water.

Step 6. Use some borax for the fleas. Dust some borax on the surfaces where your pet usually stays, and let it sit for 24 hours. Clean up afterwards.

Step 7. Repeat from steps four to six for three to five consecutive days to completely eliminate fleas.

Tips:

- Treat your home and pet simultaneously to avoid recurring flea infestations.

- Be consistent and diligent in your efforts to eliminate fleas.

Warnings:

- Keep your children and pets away from the borax and don't allow them to play in areas where you have dusted it with.

- Wear a face mask when using borax or any other form of flea powders. These powders can be irritating to the lungs, and should never be used in the presence of infants and people who have history of lung or respiratory illnesses.

- If all things fail, that's when you can resort to insecticides. - 30195

Bedbugs: Treatment Methods

By Renee Garcia

The most convenient method in treating bedbugs is to hire a professional exterminator. But still, there are many different methods to choose from.

Bedbugs can be treated in many ways. You can do any of the following effective methods: mattress cover, diatomaceous soil, insecticides, extreme heat, and steam cleaning.

One effective method in bedbug treatment is steam cleaning. The only disadvantage with this method is that it cannot be applied to all materials. Certain furnitures are finished with a material that cannot withstand steam cleaning. You have to check first before using this.

Another method is by exposing the infested furniture, linens, or mattress under the heat of the sun for a couple of hours. Before you do this, you must scrub and vacuum the infested stuff.

When discarding the vacuum bag, put this inside a plastic bag to stop transfer of the bedbugs. Before bringing the exposed material inside your house, check for bedbugs again.

Bedbug insecticides come in sprays or in dust forms. Choose which one is suited for you. It is important for you to carefully read and understand the product label and the instructions. Observe utmost care in applying the insecticide.

Diatomaceous soil is also used for bedbug treatment. This soil is composed of single-celled algae. The soil particles have jagged edges which cut through a bedbug's body. You simply have to scatter the soil around the infested area and leave it there for a couple of days. You need not worry about the soil harming you or a pet because the particles are too small. After leaving the soil for a few days, you can remove it by vacuuming. Do not forget to seal the used vacuum bag in a plastic bag.

If the bedbugs can only be found in the mattress, you can treat it by using a fabric or vinyl mattress cover. You can put the mattress inside and seal all the zippers around it. Once the mattress is sealed inside the cover, bedbugs will be confined inside the mattress. The bedbugs cannot even eat and in 6 months or more, the insects will die of hunger. - 30195

What You Need To Know About Termites

By Scott Davis

Termites are an insect that have been around for 50 million years, and allow they look like ants they come from an entirely different family. With a number of species and habitats there is a lot to learn about Termites.

Termite nests will either be mounds built above ground or in tree or they will be tunnels underground and hidden. As termites are sensitive to light and humidity nests are located by tracking the mud tunnels they create for themselves to protect them form outside influences.

The nests themselves need to have very high levels of humidity as the worker termites are very thin skinned and will easily dry out and die. They also need to maintain a high temperature and it is usually between 25 or 30 degrees inside the nest.

Diet: When most people think about termites they think of them eating wood but many species eat other organic materials. The termites have a digestion system that allows them to break down wood cellulose and convert it into sugar

Social Structure: Within a colony all the termites have a role to play which allows the colony to survive and prosper. There is usually only one Queen who can live for over twenty years, producing eggs. The King looks after the initial young offspring and fertilizes the Queen. The workers gather the food and maintain the nest. They actually seldom leave the nest as they are very thin skinned and need almost 100% humidity not to dry out. Soldiers exist to defend the colony. The reproducers which develop shedding skins until mature with wings. They can leave the nest to start a new colony or take over the duties of a dying King or Queen.

The flights by the reproducers are called colonization flights. The new King and Queen fly away from the birth nest and find a new site. The Queen then begins to lay eggs to establish the new colony. The King and Queen both drop their wings once a safe site has been picked. While the colony is small both the male and female contribute to raising the young but as the colony grows and the other roles start to be filled the Queen and King focus solely on reproduction. A colony could have anywhere from a hundred to a million inhabitants.

A tough thing about termites is that an infestation in a wooden home may show no signs until even five years after the termites have moved in. - 30195

Bed Bug Detection For Your Home

By Jack Hanley

Bed bugs were not a problem for the sixty years following World War II. The introduction of DDT practically eradicated bed bugs in the United States. However with the banning of DDT, the problem started to grow again, and now you need to be careful that you do not develop a bed bug problem. There increase in population has made it imperative that you know about bed bug detection.

Bed bugs are approximately the same size and shape of an apple seed. The make their home in furniture, especially mattresses, but will live anywhere that humans are likely to sleep or nap. That is because you are their favorite midnight snack. When it gets dark at night, they like to come out to eat. Once they are full, they scurry back to their favorite hiding place so that you are unaware of their presence.

Bed bugs may migrate into you home by hitch hiking on used furniture, luggage or clothing from hotel rooms, or even your clothing as you visit a movie theater. One female bed bug lays hundreds of eggs during her lifetime. This can lead to infestation of your own home. It does not matter if you keep your home clean or dirty. Cleanliness has nothing to do with bed bug infestation. They only need blood to survive. If they cannot get your blood, the will settle for the blood of your pets.

Once a home is fully infested with bugs, you may note a foul musty odor. There are dogs that have been trained to detect bed bugs by their smell that are often used in hotels. There are also other signs that you can look for that will get the problem under control before it becomes a full fledged infestation.

Since bed bugs like to hide during the daytime, it is important that you check out cracks and creases on the bed. Look along rails and behind the headboard. Look for rusty or brown colored stains on mattresses and bedding to be sure that you do not have a problem with bed bugs.

Keep an eye out for egg shells or discarded skins from molting bugs. Remember that your box springs offer a multitude of places for bed bugs to hide as do ripped or torn mattresses.

If you find bed bugs in the house, take immediate action to get rid of them. It will be a difficult task and you may need to call an exterminator, although many are inexperienced in dealing with bed bugs. Your mattress and box springs may need to be encased in a plastic zipper bag to prevent the bugs from eating. They will die without blood.

If you choose instead to discard your mattress and replace it, remove all clutter from the room and be sure that there are no bugs present before bringing in new bedding. Otherwise, you will just be starting the problem all over again. - 30195

Bedbugs: Methods of Treatment

By Renee Garcia

Bedbug treatment can be done in many different ways. And the most convenient for anyone will be hiring a professional exterminator for the job.

But there are many do-it-yourself ways that you can choose from: steam cleaning, extreme heat, insecticides, diatomaceous soil, and mattress cover.

Steam cleaning is an effective bedbug treatment. The only problem is that not all surfaces can be steam cleaned. Check first if the surface that you are about to clean can withstand this method.

Another method is by exposing the infested furniture, linens, or mattress under the heat of the sun for a couple of hours. Before you do this, you must scrub and vacuum the infested stuff.

It is important for you to know that after vacuuming the infested materials, you must dispose of the used vacuum bag properly. This is done by sealing the vacuum bag inside a plastic bag. And before putting back the exposed materials into the house, you must check for the presence of bedbugs again.

Have you tried using bedbug insecticides? These are also effective for bedbug treatment. You can buy these in dust forms or in sprays. Before you use the insecticide, it is best to carefully read the product label as well as the instructions. Also, you must be very careful in handling insecticides.

One more effective method for bedbug treatment is by using diatomaceous soil. The particles of diatomaceous soil have jagged edges. Any bedbug that comes into contact with it will definitely die. The soil is made up of fossils of algae that are single-celled. In using this method, you just have to leave the soil scattered around the infested area for some time. You can vacuum the soil to remove it after a couple of days. Remember to properly dispose the used vacuum bag.

If it is just your mattress that is infested with bedbugs, you can buy a vinyl or fabric mattress cover. This type of mattress cover has zippers along the sides. This seals the mattress inside making sure that no bedbugs will come in and out of the mattress. The bedbugs will not be able to bite you. Without food in at least 6 months, the bedbugs will eventually die. - 30195

How to Win the Fight Against Bedbugs

By Renee Garcia

If there are bedbugs at your house, you must begin fighting bedbugs to control the spread and severity of the infestation. You see, bedbugs travel fast because these can be carried from one area to another through furniture, pets, shoes, clothes, linens, and many others. Even multi-unit dwellings like apartments, condominiums, and hotels are not spared from bedbug infestations.

Fighting bedbugs is done is many different ways. Sun exposure is by far the simplest method. You can simply expose the infested materials under the sun for a couple of hours. This is effective in killing bedbugs. Another effective method is steam cleaning. But before you use this, check first if the material of the furniture can withstand steam cleaning. Both methods use extreme heat in killing bedbugs.

Another method is by using diatomaceous soil. This soil has jagged edges which can cut through bodies of bedbugs.

You can also use insecticides in fighting bedbugs. There are so many varieties to choose from like contact insecticides, insect growth regulators, insecticidal dusts, and residual insecticides. You can buy these in spray, liquid, or powder.

Insecticides must be applied on the entire infested area. Pay special attention to holes, crevices, and cracks as these the preferred hiding places of these insects. In handling insecticides, you must always observe utmost care. Insecticides are poisonous if ingested.

Some bedbug insecticides were formulated to be less toxic and environment-friendly. Before applying the insecticides, always read the product label and instructions first. You must also check if a certain number of treatments are needed to achieve optimal results.

After treatment, it is important to vacuum the infested area. You must also make sure that whatever live bedbugs or eggs will not be transferred by sealing the vacuum bag in plastic.

When fighting bedbugs, you must also be vigilant against re-infestation. You can do this by strictly following the treatment procedures. You can also seal your mattress inside a mattress cover. You can buy this mattress cover in fabric, vinyl, or plastic. Once the mattress is sealed inside the cover, any bedbug that was not killed during the treatment will die of starvation because it can no longer feed on your blood. You must also observe cleanliness and reduce clutter. - 30195

Easy Termite Prevention Tips

By Russ Frank

Termites can infest any home at any time. The best way to achieve termite control is to understand and practice termite prevention. Protecting a home begins with knowing the signs and the conditions that termites prefer so that you can reduce the chances that they find your home a tasty treat. You may already have termite damage and not even realize it.

Termite prevention starts when a homeowner understands the risk. Any wood that touches the ground provides access for termites. It could be something simple, like a deck or lattice work in a garden by the house. Or it could be the siding itself. Whenever ground to soil contact occurs, the threat of termites gaining access to the house occurs. It's important to keep soil and wood completely separate.

Unlike drywood termites, subterranean termites need direct access to moisture. They seek out damp wood. Look for problems with gutters and downspouts or rainwater runoff. Areas where water collects close to the structure are a serious concern. Good termite prevention requires that all moisture or runoff be diverted away from the structure.

Crawlspaces are a magnet for moisture, especially if vents, such as laundry vents are pumped through them. Examine any crawlspaces in the home for excess moisture and while performing this inspection, check for any potential termite damage as well. Reroute any vents so that they don't empty directly into the crawlspace. Also check for the same conditions of rainwater runoff which may accumulate under the crawlspace and divert the source of the water away from the house.

Mulch can also be a problem when it comes to termite prevention. To prevent termites from entering a home through these mulched areas, it's important to make sure that the mulch doesn't touch wood siding or other wood structures around the home.

Firewood can be another potential problem when it comes to termite prevention. Far too many homeowners collect and store firewood next to the house, even resting against wood siding. Move the firewood to a space in the yard away from the home.

One of the best methods of termite prevention is to have an annual termite inspection by a professional. Termite damage can be easily missed by homeowners not familiar with the subtle signs. Trained professionals can spot infestations or potential future trouble spots and prevent future damage. Such inspections may be considered "termite insurance" and are inexpensive compared to the potential damage.

Termite prevention starts by understanding that any home or wooden structure is at risk. By understanding these risks, and knowing what attracts termites, any homeowner can greatly reduce their risks. Termite control begins with knowledge, understanding and a healthy dose of termite prevention. - 30195

Are Stick Insects a Pet or Pest?

By Philip Hachisu

Stick insects have the military skills of camouflage and defense. These skills include giving of defensive odors, spraying harmful chemicals, mimicking branches, changing color, and faking their own deaths. However, even with this array of defenses from their predators the stick insect is vulnerable to attack from them, and because of this they rarely gather sufficient numbers for a plague.

However, they have had their moments, and in'63 a plague of stick insects descended on 650 square miles of forest in Southern Australia and stripped it bare. There have also been similar cases in the Pacific where coconut plantations have proved to be rich breeding grounds.

The rarity of a stick insect plague requires two main conditions: an absence of forest fires and a consistent climate. The steady climate supports the growth of the vegetation that stick insects feed on, and the lack of forest fires also allows this plant growth. Furthermore, a lack of forest fires allows stick insects populations to increase without the threat of mother nature.

Whilst these outbreaks are rare they can be caused by the introduction of species into habitats where they do not naturally occur, so you should take very good care not to allow your pet stick insect escape into the wild. If it does it will face all manner of predators, but may survive to upset the ecosystem.

Stick insects face threats from rats, birds, mammals, and even wasps. But sometimes they rise up, form a plague, and cause massive devastation. When you have your pet stick insect at home in its vivarium, it's amazing to think what they could get up to in the wild. At home they are a pet that requires delicate handling and a diet of bramble; in the wild they can devastate the environment. - 30195

Fleas, Ticks and Worms

By Owen Jones

Fleas and other parasites have always to be awarded the highest priority by dog owners. The very common incidences of flea bite allergy in dogs causes worry to many dog owners every year, especially in the summer. This is because flea bites can cause allergic reactions in the area bitten by the fleas, which is often on the back above the tail. In these cases, the affected skin becomes hairless due to the dog scratching itself very vigorously.

Heavy flea infestations can cause severe dermatitis in dogs, because the dog will scratch and scratch the area until he bleeds and can also introduce infection. If the flea bites cause an allergic reaction or even dermatitis in your dog, he/she really ought to be taken to the veterinary doctor as soon as possible, because usually, the dog will be experiencing severe discomfort by this time.

The vet will sell you a salve to soothe the itching and reduce the inflammation and some powder or a spray to kill the fleas. Prevention is better than cure and medicated collars are available to treat and prevent an infestation of external parasites like ticks and fleas.

Apart from fleas, other parasites like ticks and lice plus the internal parasites like hookworms, round worms, whip worms etc. can have an adverse effect on the the well-being of your dog. For example, if hookworms have infected a dog, that dog will almost surely suffer from anaemia soon. The signs of anaemia become more obvious depending on the advancement of the hookworm infection.

Hookworm larvae can enter directly through the skin into the internal body and cause severe problems inside the infected dog. These dogs may show lesions on their paws and on their skin because of dermatitis. Often, skin rashes occur too in these cases and the affected animal may also have diarrhoea, which is flecked with blood.

Nearly all dogs and definitely all puppies will have round worms at some time, which is why dogs can sometimes be seen rubbing their bottoms along the floor. However, if round worms are present in very large numbers, affected puppies show a pot belly, which is easily noticeable by the dog's owners themselves. This can result in malnutrition and even death. A dose of piperazine salts can be given orally for the cure of this problem. However, broad-spectrum anthelmintics like pyrantel pamoate, fenbendazole etc. will also cure this very common condition.

Many drugs have arrived on the market to treat fleas and other parasites, although nowadays, the medical agent called ivermectin seems to be preferred by many dog owners to clear up fleas and other parasites in dogs. This drug is available for injection or oral use and is now even available for external application too. - 30195

Are There Bedbugs in your Hotel Room?

By Renee Garcia

International travel has been the main route of bedbug transmission. In fact, it is believed that bedbugs got into the United States by European colonists. During those days, DDT, a very strong insecticide, was used to eradicate bedbugs. But when the pesticide was banned, incidences of bedbug infestations started increasing as well.

Bedbugs can be easily transmitted from one location to another. These insects can get into clothes, luggage, furniture, pets, shoes, and others. In fact, hotels are very much at risk into getting infested with bedbugs. This is because of high occupancy rates. In hotels, many people come and go. And these hotel guests can be carriers of bedbugs.

If you are staying in a hotel, how can you check if it has bedbugs?

Crevices and cracks on the walls and floors are usual habitats of bedbugs. If you see any crack or crevice inside your hotel room, you definitely have to check for bedbugs. You can also check the mattress. Look for cracks, red spots, and brown spots. The red spots are caused by blood from crushed bedbugs. The brown spots are caused by the bedbug's feces.

It is best to inform the manager of your observations. You also have to transfer to a different hotel. Transferring in another room in the same hotel does not guarantee that there will be no bedbugs. You see, bedbugs travel easily. Thus, of one room in the hotel has bedbugs, it is very likely that the other rooms also have bedbugs. In fact, there are incidences that bedbug infestations were found in multi-unit condominiums and hotels.

When you are in a hotel, it is best to make use of the suitcase stand instead of leaving your bags on the floor or furniture.

If you slept in a hotel room that has bedbugs, you will definitely find bite marks in the morning. Bedbug bites are pinkish to red lesions that are flat or raised. These can also be itchy. Bedbug bites form a linear pattern which differentiates them from other insect bites.

In this case, you must vacuum your bags (seams included) and every item of clothing. Wash these under very hot water to kill the bedbugs and eggs. Treat the bites with topical corticosteroids. - 30195

Kill Bedbugs: Do-It-Yourself Methods

By Renee Garcia

There are some homeowners who immediately hire an exterminator in getting rid of the bedbugs. Perhaps they didnt know that they can get rid of the bedbugs on their own. Yes, you can kill bedbugs. You just have to be determined and patient enough to finish the treatment.

Insecticides have been very effective in killing bedbugs. You can find these in sprays or dust form. Whichever product you choose, make sure that you strictly follow the application procedures. Insecticides must also be handled with care because these are poisonous.

Another method to kill bedbugs is through extreme heat. You can do this by steam cleaning the infested furniture. If you decide to use steam cleaning, you must first check if the material used in the furniture can withstand this.

You can also expose the infested furniture under the heat of the sun. Leave the furniture for 4 hours or more.

Vacuum and scrub the surface of the infested material before steam cleaning or sun exposure.

Bedbugs can also be killed by diatomaceous soil. The particles of this soil have jagged edges which can cut through bodies of bedbugs. As for the soil harming you or an animal, you have nothing to worry about because the particles are too small to do that. Remember to scrub and vacuum the surfaces before you scatter the soil. Scatter the soil around and on infested materials and leave it there for a couple of days. Vacuum after a couple of days.

You can use a mattress cover in killing bedbugs. How does this work? A mattress cover has zippers around it. This way, the mattress will be sealed inside. No bedbug can be transferred from one place to another. And no bedbug can bite you. If bedbugs cannot get to you for their food, they will die of hunger. This will happen in 6 months or more.

The used vacuum bag must always be disposed properly. This means that you must seal it inside a plastic bag to ensure that live eggs and bedbugs will not be transmitted. Never leave the used vacuum bag around the house. - 30195

Mosquito Deleto Synopsis

By Amy Reese

When you think of annoying things, mosquitoes are at the top of the list. I was never so happy when I stumbled upon a Coleman Mosquito Deleto for sale a while back. I read up on the system and found out how well it worked. My skin was already jumping for joy.

I purchased the Mosquito Deleto a while back. I wanted something that would protect my skin and outdoor experience. Unfortunately for all humans, mosquitoes pick up body odors, heat and carbon dioxide from us. That means they are always drawn to us.

The Mosquito Deleto does everything you could ask a product to do. The pests are gone and stay away. Let?s look at how they do this.

I previously mentioned how mosquitoes notice human beings. While that information is useful to know, what Mosquito Deleto did was build their entire concept on it.

The technology emits carbon dioxide, odors and heat to trick the mosquitoes. It doesn?t take much to outsmart a bug, but that is what the Mosquito Deleto does. They end up being lured and to get stuck on a trip of adhesive before they dry up and die.

There is an add-on you can buy called the Mosquito Deleto Inhibitor. This adds another odor to the system so you are protected as well. This works great if you are getting bit too much.

The whole system of the Mosquito Deleto costs around $200 in most stores. The replacement adhesive costs an extra $15 each time.

If the pricing seems a little steep, there are always deals online to make it more affordable. I found mine online myself, so it can be done.

Other than that, I wish you the best of luck in getting rid of these party crashers. Next summer doesn?t have to be a terrible experience with the Mosquito Deleto on your side. - 30195

How to Do Bedbug Extermination

By Renee Garcia

In cases of bedbug infestation, a professional exterminator is usually hired. On the other hand, if you want to try killing the bedbugs on your own, you can definitely do so. Just remember that patience is very important in identifying the sites of infestation and in making sure that all bedbugs were exterminated.

Bedbug extermination can be done in a lot of ways. One of the time-tested methods is by exposing the infested furniture under the heat of the sun. Bedbugs die because of extreme heat. In doing this, you must first scrub and vacuum the infested furniture. This will dislodge all the bedbugs and eggs. Remember to put the used vacuum bag inside a plastic bag to contain the bedbugs. Now you can expose the furniture under the sun for some time.

Another effective method is steam cleaning. The only disadvantage with this method is that not all materials can withstand it. Therefore, before using this method, you must be very sure that the furniture will not be destroyed.

Diatomaceous soil can also be used. This soil contains single-celled algae which have jagged edges. The edges of the soil can kill bedbugs that come into contact with it. Scatter the soil around infested areas. Leave it there for a few days then you can vacuum the soil. Again, dispose of the used vacuum bag properly. You have nothing to worry because the soil particles cannot harm you or your pets.

You can also buy bedbug insecticides. Properly read the product label and follow the instructions. Remember that insecticides must be handled with utmost care. This is also an effective method of bedbug extermination.

If only your mattress is infested, using a mattress cover can be effective as well. You can buy one that is made of fabric or vinyl. These mattress covers come with zippers on the sides for you to seal the mattress in. This way, no bedbug can get out of the mattress.

Bedbugs can no longer bite you thereby starving them to death! In at least 6 months, the bedbugs in your mattress will be dead.

All these methods are effective in bedbug extermination. You do not have to hire a professional exterminator after all. - 30195

Dealing with Aphids in Your Greenhouse

By Betsy Woodworth

Aphids have a tendency to settle into your greenhouse as summer closes and fall settles in. Vegetation in your greenhouse provides an appetizing alternative to the outside garden. Aphids are a common greenhouse problem, and not the easiest to combat.

Keep them out! - Carefully monitoring plants you bring into your greenhouse is the first step in dealing with aphids. Choose healthy and vigorous plants, and spray them down with your garden hose to knock off any hitchhikers before you bring them into your greenhouse. If the plant has an obvious insect infestation, do not bring it into your greenhouse. Period. If you must, spray it with an insect control spray, or enclose it with a plastic bag in which you place an insecticide strip for two or three days. Hose your plant down after taking it out of the treatment bag, before transplanting it to your greenhouse.

Minimal measures - Aphids can sometimes become established no matter how careful you are. If this happens there are several alternative paths you can take. If you do not want to use any insecticides in your greenhouse environment, you have a couple options. Hosing down infected plants with a powerful stream from your garden hose can be effective for a while. This may be the best option If you plan on closing down your greenhouse soon. Some hobby greenhouse gardeners choose to shut their greenhouse down for anywhere from 2-4 months in the winter allowing nature to take its course and freeze out insect pests. Diatomaceous earth is effective if you want a little more aggressive natural control. Sprinkle this powder on and under leaves of effected plants. This can be an effective control if you catch the problem early and have isolated insects in one part of your greenhouse,

More aggressive tactics-Using a fast acting insecticide that is safe for use on vegetable gardens is another way to control your aphid problem. There are several varieties out there that are "garden safe." Check your local garden center or hardware store for alternatives. Most of these involve an organic insecticidal soap that takes care of aphids, or at least significantly reduces their number. You can also make your own version of this by mixing a tablespoon of liquid dish detergent with water in a quart sprayer. The soap coats the aphids and reduces their numbers. You have to spray every day for best results, paying particular attention to the underside of leaves of infected plants.

Biological controls - another alternative to aphid control are biological controls, such as lacewings, ladybugs and midges. Several companies provide these predators for your greenhouses. If using this approach, be sure to limit your use of insecticidal spray, as it will kill off your predator population, as well as your pests.

Using a combination of the above controls, you can keep your greenhouse healthy and productive throughout the fall and winter greenhouse growing seasons. - 30195

They avoid light and hide in places where light does not reach easily like inside cracks and holes and deep inside of furniture like bed frame, box spring, headboard, Mattress, dresser, deep inside bed linen and sheets, behind picture frames, mirrors, curtains, loose carpet and wall paper, chairs, couches etc. Inspect all of them meticulously. Inspect the edges of bed frame, mattress and box spring. Remove mattress and box spring from the bed frame and check underneath. Inspect the head board. If you find bed bugs, collect them using a vacuum cleaner. Use a sticky tape to collect them if the insects are hiding in a place where it is not easy to reach with vacuum cleaner or its attachment. Hold and push the tape on the insects and collect them in a plastic bag. Look out for bed bug eggs. They are very small, about the size of a dust particle. Their color is yellowish white. And they are very sticky. You will have to use a hard brush to scrub them off. Collect them in plastic bags. When you feel confident that you have cleaned the entire room thoroughly, remove the vacuum bag and seal it. Seal all other plastic bags where you collected the bed bugs. Promptly dump them in a dumpster. This step is very effective in removing a large portion of bed bug infestation.

Segregation: Let's acknowledge: Getting rid of bed bugs is very hard. So why not protect what you value most? Plastic bags or plastic containers can be very effective in creating a barrier against bed bugs. Use them to Store all your cloths and books. Make sure that the bedbugs can not reach your bed by pulling it away form the walls. Now we want to make sure that the bedbugs can not crawl up the bed from the floor. Tuck bed linens and cover tightly so that they do not touch the floor. Bed frame and the legs of the bed should be protected by using double sided tape on them. Use bed bug interceptors to protect legs of the bed, couch, sofa etc. You can buy bed bug interceptors from the web or use glass or small pots/pans/dish with very smooth surface for the same. This will make it impossible or extremely difficult for bed bugs to climb up your bed.

Water/Heat control to kill bed bugs: High temperature (above 120 F/50 C) can easily kill bed bugs. Identify the items which can be washed safely e.g. cloths, curtains, shoes etc. Wash them thoroughly at high temperature. Items which can not be washed but can be put in a dryer should be identified. Run them through hot dryer for two cycles at high temperature. Some professional dryer achieve very high temperatures, which are good for killing the bedbugs. What about bed bugs hiding inside the cracks and holes? You can use steam to kill them. Buy a steamer from Amazon, Wal-Mart etc and steam them away. This is a very powerful strategy for killing bed bugs.

Home Renovations DIY

By Colin Jones

It seems that there has been a wane in consumer confidence in the building and construction industry of late. This may be because of the scams shown on television or the bribery and corruption rampant in the corporate sector, but it is almost certainly the same motivation why so many are now carrying out home improvements by themselves.

And why shouldn't they? A little knowledge of the technical aspects combined with an eye for creativity is often enough to complete the home improvement on your own.

Why are people turning to DIY home improvements?

There are many individuals trying to pass themselves off as construction workers, although they do not have a lot of expertise in construction or home maintenance and they are literally are out there right now practising, learning their trades on homes like yours and mine across the country.

As a result, homeowners are finding that the jobs are not being finished to their liking. At times they are even pre-paying for services that do not get done or were not part of the arrangement.

You do not have to trust and pay someone to enhance your home. Why not have a go yourself?

You can augment your home?s existing concrete surfaces using acid stains, acrylic paints, epoxy paints, and scoring techniques.

If you are tired of looking at dull gray concrete, there are some simple projects if you are earnest about having a go at home improvement DIY, you can easily give your patio, driveway or garage a refreshing new look.

Attractive concrete work costs about double that of standard concrete, which is why many people cannot afford it.

However, there are inexpensive methods to beautify concrete after it has cured, without having to pay skilled tradesmen.

Acid-based concrete stains are becoming more and more fashionable for coloring concrete surfaces. They chemically react with the fibres in the cement material to produce permanent color with a variegated or mottled appearance similar to that of marble. This results in a natural, stylish looking surface.

Water-based concrete stains are an alternative to acid stains but are much more user friendly because they are so much less dangerous. These stains do not chemically react with the concrete; they are absorbed into the porous surface and act like a dye. The big benefit of water based stains is the wide array of colors available.

If you want to risk going beyond the basic staining of your concrete, consider using some scoring techniques to create patterns on the surface.

You can make your concrete resemble a tiled floor for instance. It is just up to your imagination. A mini angle grinder with a 4 inch cutting wheel is the ideal device for this.

The important thing to bear in mind when scoring is to draw the pattern on the concrete first and make sure you are pleased with the way it looks because scoring is irreversible.

Epoxy paints make an excellent coating for garage floors and cellar floors. Many industrial floors have epoxy coatings because of their hardiness and resilience to chemical spills as well as their appearance.

In recent years, however, it has become very popular for residential use with the availability of an growing quantity of different colors. This is not a tricky job, but the key to successful application is surface preparation.

Epoxy paints have also become available in a water based form making it safe for the DIY'er and perfect for indoor jobs. They cost a little more than stains. For a 400 square foot area, you'll spend about $200 for the materials required for this project.

So, you see? You do not have to spend big money to improve your home. You have the ability to do it yourself. With a few instructions and a little bit of work, anyone can turn dull concrete into a work of art of their own. - 30195

Bedbug Bites and Their Habitats

By Renee Garcia

What are the usual insects that you see at your house? Most people complain about mosquitoes, cockroaches, or spiders. But have you had bedbugs at home? It is rather unfortunate that my house has bedbugs. How did I find out? Well, I kept waking up because of these itchy bites on my back. The bite marks were pinkish and flat. After a few sleepless nights, I decided to go see my doctor.

The doctor was able to identify that what I have are bedbug bites because of the pattern. He told me that the linear pattern, like 3 in a row, is exclusive to bedbug bites. And since I only get bitten after sleeping in my room, he told me to start checking for bedbugs there.

The doctor prescribed topical corticosteroids for the bedbug bites. After application, the itchiness subsided and the bite marks disappeared. My doctors advice was to refrain from scratching the bite marks as this will only cause scars.

I went home and read first how to find and identify bedbugs. I started with the mattress. Since my mattress has been with me for so long, I already saw cracks in it. These can be hiding places of my bedbugs!

I also saw brown and red spots on the mattress. According to what I read, the red spots are from blood of crushed bedbugs while the brown spots are their feces. Yikes, I am sleeping on a mattress with bedbug poop!

These evidences made me surer that I will indeed find bedbugs in my mattress. Upon inspection, I saw adult and nymphs. The adult bedbugs measured about 4 to 5 mm in length. The nymphs were as small as the seeds of an apple. Adult bedbugs have reddish-brown, wingless, flat, oval, and banded bodies. The nymphs, on the other hand, were light and translucent.

Now, I must treat my mattress to get rid of the bedbugs. I also needed to check everything that was close to the mattress like the bed frame, floors, drawers, night stand, linens, and others. I breathed a sigh of relief upon finding out that only my mattress was infested.

I bought a vinyl mattress cover. This seals my mattress inside. Now, my bedbugs wont be able to bite me. No food means death in at least 6 months. - 30195

Bed bugs - How To Get Rid Of Without Using Chemicals, In Three Easy Steps!

By Peter N King

Bed bug victims know how difficult it is to get rid of them! It is a long drawn battle against these irritating, sleep destroying bugs. Using pesticides may not be first choice for some as it introduces a lot of chemicals in your home. So people get creative and try different solutions.

Here are three simple steps you can take for getting rid of bed bugs without using chemicals: Physical removal or elimination, Isolation and Water/Temperature control

Killing bedbugs is difficult and for quicker and permanent results, you will have to combine several options. Here are the solutions in detail:

Physical elimination: In this step we identify the bed infestations and remove them by using a vacuum cleaner, hard brush or a sticky tape. Like all other animals and insects, Bed bugs prefer to hide close to their prey. They are usually found in bed room furniture and sometimes even in living room furniture. Mattress, box spring, headboard, dresser, behind wall paper and under loose carpet, inside bed linen, behind curtains, picture frames, mirrors, under the chairs, couches etc. Examine all of them thoroughly. Examine the edges of box spring, mattress and bed frame. Turn over box spring and mattress and check underneath. Remove mattress and box spring from the bed frame examine the head board. When you find bed bugs, use a vacuum cleaner to collect them. If the infestation can not be reached with vacuum cleaner or its attachment, use a sticky tape. Press the sticky tape hard on them and then put it in a plastic bag. During your search, you may come across bed bug eggs. They are yellowish white sticky balls. They are very tiny about the size of a pin head. Scrub them off with a hard brush and put them in plastic bags. Remove the vacuum bag and seal it and quickly throw it in a dumpster. A large portion of bed bugs can be removed by this step.

Mosquito Plants Explained

By Andrew Marshall

I made this page because I know a lot of people have the same main question as I did when I heard about mosquito plants. You hear about all the machines, chemicals, etc. to get rid of nature?s biggest pest, but still have the question.

Do mosquito plants do the trick?

Before we look into the effectiveness the mosquito plants have, let?s look at some background information on the subject.

Made of citronella grass and scented geranium, the mosquito plant blends well to give out an odor that keeps mosquitoes away. These can be purchased just about anywhere when summer is about to start.

When buying mosquito plants, you need to think of where you want to put them. Most claim they work the best in areas with a lot of people walking. The odors are put out at a higher rate with such interaction.

Bug sprays always seem to be so over-produced. You have all kinds of chemicals that smell weird thrown onto your body, and you feel sticky. If you want an organic way of keeping them off of you, the mosquito plant has oils you can rub on your skin. Just make sure you aren?t allergic to the plant before spreading it.

Planting a new mosquito plant also needs to be done somewhere that is warm and dry. This is so it will grow to be big, thus putting out more mosquito repellent.

The cost of these mosquito plants vary depending on the size you want. A small one can cost just 5 dollars, while big ones cost around 50 dollars. These are available at all the local nurseries and green houses.

Online retailers also offer great deals if you want to go that route. They will ship to your doorstep if you want, and for usually cheaper than local stores. If you want a large variety, this might be your best option to buy a mosquito plant. - 30195

Electronic Bug Zapper

By Owen Jones

The indoor bug killer is the best way of ridding your immediate vicinity of insects, especially the flying ones such as mosquitoes. The electric insect killer vaporizes any insect from a mosquito to a gnat instantly on contact with a pleasingly loud, electrical 'zap'!

However, this does not mean to say that the electric insect killer cannot be used outdoors, so long as it is not raining. It should be handled just like any other high voltage electrical equipment. Keep the indoor insect zapper dry and please do not use it when you are standing in the pool!

Models do vary a lot, but there are really only two types of hand held insect zapper: the battery operated bug killer and the rechargeable electric bug zapper. Both are equally effective at killing bugs and employ the same principle.

The indoor insect killer looks like a 'kids' tennis racquet, but with three layers of 'strings', which are in fact wires. The innermost grid of wires becomes live at the touch of a button while the other two networks, one on either side, are earths.

When an insect is trapped between the wires of the electric insect zapper, it creates a short, which evaporates it instantaneously with a loud crack. The indoor insect zapper will kill other insects too, but they tend to fry rather than explode.

I have been using the rechargeable sort for more than five years and am extremely satisfied with the electric bug killer. In fact, the electric bug zapper has come a long way in the last few years. A fully charged electric insect killer is strong enough to last for a few hundred swipes and will hold it's charge, when unused, for weeks without any appreciable discharge.

The battery recharge unit will take intensive use for the best part of a year, although its ability to hold a charge for a few weeks gradually reduces after six or seven months.

The latest indoor bug killer I've used has a main on/off switch, a light that shines when it is live (the brightness of this light also gives an indication of the battery's strength) and a light that comes on when the zapper is plugged in on recharge.

The instructions suggest that the bug zapper should be (re)charged for about sixteen hours. However, I usually put it on charge over night once or twice every week or two, although the hand held bug zapper shows a large increase in performance with only a few hours recharging.

The latest model I've seen also comes with a strong light called a 'headlamp'. I have found this very useful when walking in the garden, but I'm not sure whether it's meant to lure the flies in the dark so that you can zap them if you're feeling bored or just vindictive. You know, a bit like an Anglerfish.

I've used the headlamp on my electric insect killer for that too, but the headlamp uses a lot of battery power. All in all, the hand held bug zapper is a big asset to any outdoor event. The hand held bug killer is useful to 'clean out' your bedroom before retiring; it's unbeatable for evening mosquitoes and it will clear a lunch table of wasps too. - 30195

Consider Pest Control Environment Friendly Ideas

By Clark Harrington

Why use environmentally friendly pest controls? It is known that chemical pesticides kill insects effectively but these chemicals can also be lethal to humans and animals alike and lead to ecological concerns if not used properly and properly managed. On the other hand natural pesticides are usually more ecological and are way more conducive to environmental sustainability.

The following list contains environmentally friendly ideas for bug elimination in your garden. They're worth trying before using chemical insecticides.

* A saucer of beer will lure and drown slugs and snails.

* To combat mould quarter fill a waste bin with seaweed, cover with water and leave for many weeks. Dilute the mix to the percentage of one part seaweed stew to 6 parts water before application.

* Make a chive spray to reduce mildew on zucchini and squish plants by steeping 1 cup of sliced chive leaves and three cups of water for many hours. Strain and add an equal part of water before spraying.

* Aphids can be squashed by hand, or blasted with a garden hose ( water restrictions permitting ). Aphids can also be discouraged by making a nasturtium spray. The spray is made by taking one cup of nasturtium leaves and one cup of water and carefully bringing to the boil over 15 mins. When the mix is cool, strain and spray.

* To protect young seeds make a protective collar from an old yogurt container.

* To deter aphids and caterpillars make a spray by boiling rhubarb leaves in water. Strain the mix and dilute to the proportion of one part rhubarb to four parts water.

* Gritty sawdust spread around sprouts will deter snails and slugs who hate the feel.

* To keep birds from eating your house grown fruit drape bird netting over trees or otherwise hang aluminum pie dishes or old CDs from the branches to make a reflection to frighten the birds away.

* Used coffee grounds spread around seeds will kill slugs and snails.

* Control pear and cherry slug by throwing wood ashes into the influenced trees. The ashes dehydrate the slugs. - 30195

How to Inspect for Bedbugs

By Renee Garcia

Do you know when to start inspecting for bedbugs?

If you get sleepless nights and observe bite marks in the morning, you must first determine what is causing the bite marks. Bedbug bites are like mosquito bites because these are pink to red in color.

Bedbug bites can either be raised or flat and these usually have a pattern. For example, you will find 4 or more bites in a row. When a bedbug is disturbed during feeding, it usually moves a bit farther from its initial position, causing the pattern.

The bedbug bites also cause itching and burning. Although the bites do not cause any disease, the itching and burning can bring discomfort. For treatment, topical corticosteroids are the most effective. These relieve the burning and itching as well as make the bite marks disappear.

Systemic corticosteroids and antihistamines have also been used for treatment. But these drugs only address the itching and burning.

Now that you have established that the bite marks were caused by bedbugs, you must start checking for the insects. Observe when and where the bite marks usually appear. If these usually appear after sleeping on your bed, check the mattress first. Look for cracks as these can be the entry points of bedbugs. Red and brown spots also mean a bedbug infestation. The red spots are from blood of crushed bedbugs. The brown spots are the bedbugs feces.

After checking the mattress, also inspect other areas of the room like carpets, walls, bedposts, furniture, dressers, drawers, and others. Again, look for cracks as these are where bedbugs usually live.

Now that you have identified the area of infestation as well as the specific infested furnitures, you must make sure that nothing will come out and into the room. Bedbugs can travel easily through furniture, linens, and even shoelaces. After identifying the area of infestation, getting rid of the insects must be done as soon as possible. - 30195

Dogs' Heart Worm, Fleas and other Parasites

By Owen Jones

Heart worm, fleas and other parasites in dogs need to be destroyed by using the appropriate medication on them. Loads of products have come onto the market to protect dogs from heart worms, fleas and other parasites like hook worms, whip worms, round worms, lice, ticks etc.

Of the heart worms, fleas and other parasites, fleas can produce a super-sensitive reaction in the affected animal. Animals infested with fleas scratch their bodies very vigorously. Frequently the scratching becomes so severe that the skin becomes super-sensitive and dermatitis occurs in the affected areas of skin.

The result of a serious flea infestation is often that your dog can not lie down for long or sleep properly due to the persistent flea bites. Therefore, the animal looks as if has some severe skin disease. If the your dog is not properly attended to for these flea bites, there could be a secondary bacterial attack in these sites and there may even be a bad smell coming from the affected area of the animal's skin.

You need to observe your dog closely in order prevent a serious infestation. It is essential to prevent such an outbreak as they are extremely distressing to dogs. Similarly, the skin of the animal needs to be checked regularly for the presence of ticks and lice. In order to do this properly, you need to look at the dog's skin by separating the dog's hairs. The easiest way to do this is by slowly back-combing or ruffling the dog's hair.

Often, if your pet is anaemic, and he is not infested with fleas, you need to rule out hookworm. Symptoms of hookworm are anaemia, loose stools and a pot belly. The dog's owner may recognize these symptoms themselves, however, to be honest, the dog needs to undergo a routine health examination at the vet's involving faecal and hematological examinations.

There are many commercial products available on the market, some of which are effective for dealing with all these conditions in a single dose. Drugs like ivermectin are highly efficacious and are obtainable in injection, oral and solution forms. The latter should be applied directly on the dog's skin. These drugs can induce the prevention of these conditions too.

So, the best strategy to follow is to keep a sharp eye on your dog. This can most easily be done at bath time and when you are grooming him. You can use an anti-flea and anti-tick shampoo, which will keep these pests under control, if used regularly. Couple this with regular grooming with a lice comb and the use of a flea collar should keep your pet tick, lice, and flea free. - 30195

How to Find Bedbugs in the Mattress

By Renee Garcia

Do you know where bedbugs live? I am sure that you already know the answer just by the name of these insects. Yes, bedbugs live in the mattress or sofa " in places that you usually lie down.

How will you know if you have bedbugs? The first manifestation of bedbugs is their bite marks. If you find bite marks in the morning, check if these are from bedbugs.

Bedbug bites can be flat or raised lesions that are pink or red in color. The bites form a linear pattern which is typical of bedbug bites. The pattern is caused by any disruption while the bedbug is feeding. The food of bedbugs is the blood of humans and other warm-blooded animals.

Bedbug bites cannot cause any disease. But the bites can cause discomfort from burning and itching. To relieve itching and burning, topical corticosteroids are prescribed. These can also make the bite marks disappear fast.

If the bite marks are itchy, stop yourself from scratching because this will cause scarring. Antihistamines and systemic corticosteroids are also used to treat the burning sensation and itchiness. But these medicines are not helpful in making the bite marks disappear faster.

If you are sure that bedbugs are the culprits, check the mattress first. Inspect your mattress for any crack or crevice. Look for brown and red spots as well. The brown spots are from feces of the bedbugs. The red spots are from blood of crushed bedbugs.

Because the mattress is the preferred habitat of bedbugs, you must also inspect anything that it is close to it. Inspect the walls, floors, bed frames or posts as well. If only the mattress is infested, you can spray bedbug insecticides on the mattress.

After treating the mattress with insecticides, seal the mattress inside a mattress cover. The mattress cover will act as a barrier between the bedbugs and you. The bedbugs will no longer bite you. In 6 months, the bedbugs will die because of starvation. - 30195

Treating Bedbugs

By Renee Garcia

Bedbug treatment can be done by a professional exterminator. If you do not want to do it yourself, you can always contact one. But if you believe that you can do it, there are many methods to choose from.

Extreme heat is an effective bedbug treatment. First, scrub and vacuum each surface of the infested mattress or furniture. Seal the vacuum bag in a plastic container. This will stop any transfer of bedbugs.

Exposing the mattress or furniture under the sun can kill bedbugs. Leave them there for hours. And make sure to inspect for bedbugs before bringing them back inside your house.

Diatomaceous soil is also used to kill bedbugs. This soil is composed of single-celled algae. The soils jagged edges can cut through a bedbugs body. The soil cannot harm you or any pet because its particles are too small. Scatter the soil in the infested area and on infested furniture. Leave the soil there for a day or two. Then, you can vacuum to remove the soil.

Bedbugs can also be killed through steam cleaning. The only problem with this method is that not all surfaces can withstand steam cleaning. Therefore, you must be very sure that the furniture will not be destroyed if you choose to use this method.

Bedbug insecticides are also effective. These can be bought either in sprays or in dust form. You can even buy insecticides that are less toxic and eco-friendly. In buying insecticides, just be sure that you get one designed to kill bedbugs. Before application, be sure to read the product label and instructions. Also remember that insecticides must be handled with care at all times.

If you only found bedbugs in your mattress, use a mattress cover to kill the bedbugs. The mattress cover will seal the bedbugs inside. The insects will no longer be able to bite you because of the cover. Thus, they will die of hunger. In 6 months, bedbugs will die.

All these methods have been proven effective in killing bedbugs. Choose one to get rid of the bedbug infestation in your home. - 30195

Unusual Uses for the Indoor Bug Zapper

By Owen Jones

I don't know whether you have ever used a handheld, indoor bug zapper, but I think that they are wonderful. I'm talking about the handheld kind that looks like a child?s plastic, toy tennis racquet. They come in two basic kinds. I prefer the rechargeable bug zapper, because batteries end up up costing more than the indoor bug zapper itself, although you could always buy rechargeable batteries, but then they are high-priced as well.

My wife and I like to pass time in the garden. We meet friends there, lunch there and generally loaf about outside, as do most people about here, when they are not working. What's more, it's much cooler outside than inside. A comfy chair, some snacks, a cool drink and a book or a buddy and life does not get much better. In fact, it?s idyllic.

That is until about six or seven o'clock when the first squadron of mosquitoes have judged that the sun's rays have lost enough strength that they will not evaporate and they come out looking for blood. Some evenings are worse than others, of course. Normally, the mosquitoes are pretty bearable, especially seeing as I have discovered the indoor bug zapper. (I don't know why it is called an 'indoor bug zapper', it is equally as effective outdoors as in).

It's not that I want to kill things, but I find it difficult to have sympathy for mosquitoes. Nevertheless, I do get a certain amount of enjoyment from seeing and hearing mosquitoes and other bugs literally blow up with a flash and a spark as they come into contact with the electric and ground wires of the indoor bug zapper. These electric bug zappers are capable of packing quite a charge, especially if the batteries are new or the pack is wholly charged.

The other day, I found a new use for my handheld, indoor bug zapper. I'll tell you how it came about. I was in the garden, as normal, and my bug zapper was close at hand as the first squadron of mosquitoes was expected. I had my book in one hand and the bug zapper on my knees, when my wife asked me to go to the store for her. No problem, therefore, I set off on the five minute walk.

I was half-way there when I realized that I had the indoor bug zapper in my hand, but it was not worth taking it home and beginning the journey again. Anyway, on my return trip, I had my small bag of groceries in one hand and the indoor bug zapper in the other, when a local tyrant of a dog came running out of a garden right for me. This has occurred often and, although he has never bitten me yet, it is quite intimidating. He stood there glaring at me with teeth bared and his 'pack' of sundry neighborhood pals came out to surround me and join in.

I don't really know what the best course of action is in this situation. I have tried holding my ground, but the intimidation just goes on and I have tried to keep walking, but he gets worryingly close by on occasion. This time, I unexpectedly lashed out with the indoor bug zapper and just caught him on the snout. Well, I'm not sure whether it hurt him, it did not seem to too much, but it gave him a very nasty shock in more ways than one, I can tell you! He leapt about four feet into the air as if he were on a pogo stick and then ran for all he was worth with all his pals following him. It was very gratifying after six months of aggravation from this dog.

Anyway, I don't take my indoor bug zapper everywhere with me, but I will in future, if any more local dogs bother me. I know it works a treat. I have seen that one since, but he keeps far away from me and doesn't utter a sound. I think I would take my indoor bug zapper with me, if I were wandering in an unknown part of town or the park nevertheless. - 30195

Protecting Your House From Damages That Carpenter Ants May Cause

By Clark Harrington

Chippie Ants are social and adaptive creatures. For this, they can be considered as one of the insects that need persistent bug elimination attention. For humans, carpenter Ants are a bother. They create colonies inside houses and buildings and destroy structures and properties.

Total extermination of a whole ant population in an area affected of the house could be a plausibly impossible job.

That's why controlling and managing the population of these pests are more likely to be done than totally wiping them out of the area. First and foremost, prevent the carpenter Ants from entering into the house by sealing off all possible entrances. These can come in the shape of holes in the walls, cracks and tiny openings. Cut off branches and limbs of trees that come in contact with the house. These act as paths for them to move from their colonies in nearby tree stumps and barks.

However, when the ants have recently entered the home and have established colonies in many areas of the house, many things can still be done to manage their population. Eliminate all food sources. Keep food leftovers in tightly sealed boxes to get round this type of insect from scouting them and leading other fellow wood worker Ants into the food. Better yet, place food in the refrigerator to both forestall ants from taking them and to keep the food fresh and palatable. Wipe counter tops and sweep kitchen floors continually. Remove food crumbs and stains in the table, drawers and food cabinets.

Erase the scent trails of worker ants. Wipe the trail with a sponge of soapy water, as water alone isn't enough to fully take away the smell.

Start wiping from the food source and toward the colony or nest of the chippie Ants or as near to that as possible. - 30195

Do You Have a Bedbug Infestation?

By Renee Garcia

Do you know how a bedbug infestation starts? There are many possible ways with which bedbugs can enter your homes. For instance, you could have stayed in a hotel that is infested with bedbugs. And because you did not know this, the bedbugs could enter your house through your luggage.

Another way of getting bedbugs into your house is by buying used clothing or furniture. Also, if you live in a multi-unit apartment, building, or condominium, bedbugs can get from one place to the other through pets. It only takes getting in contact with these insects. Bedbugs can hitch a ride on your clothes or your shoelaces.

You must be aware whether you have a bedbug infestation or not. Bedbug bites are the first sign of infestation. These bite marks can be raised or flat lesions that are pinkish to red in color. Bedbug bites are easily identified because of their linear pattern.

A burning sensation and itchiness can be caused by the bedbug bites. To treat these, antihistamines or systemic corticosteroids are prescribed. And if you want the bedbug bites to disappear, topical corticosteroids are applied. It is advised not to scratch the lesions as this will cause scarring.

Once you have established that what you have are bedbug bites, finding the insects is the next step in determining bedbug infestation. You can begin with the mattress or sofa as these are the most preferred habitats of bedbugs.

Look for cracks or holes in the mattress or sofa. Also inspect for brown or red spots. The brown spots are the fecal matter of bedbugs. While the red spots are from blood of the crushed insects. If you see these signs, you definitely have a bedbug infestation.

How do bedbugs look like? The adult forms of these insects are wingless and reddish-brown. Adult bedbugs have flat oval bodies with a banded look because of the microscopic hairs. On the other hand, nymphs are lighter in color and translucent.

Now you know that you have a bedbug infestation. Call an exterminator to get rid of them. - 30195

The information in the log files include your IP (internet protocol) address, your ISP (internet service provider, such as AOL or Shaw Cable), the browser you used to visit our site (such as Internet Explorer or Firefox), the time you visited our site and which pages you visited throughout our site.

Cookies and Web Beacons
We do use cookies to store information, such as your personal preferences when you visit our site. This could include only showing you a popup once in your visit, or the ability to login to some of our features, such as forums.

We also use third party advertisements on this website to support our site. Some of these advertisers may use technology such as cookies and web beacons when they advertise on our site, which will also send these advertisers (such as Google through the Google AdSense program) information including your IP address, your ISP , the browser you used to visit our site, and in some cases, whether you have Flash installed. This is generally used for geotargeting purposes (showing New York real estate ads to someone in New York, for example) or showing certain ads based on specific sites visited (such as showing cooking ads to someone who frequents cooking sites).

DoubleClick DART cookies
We also may use DART cookies for ad serving through Google’s DoubleClick, which places a cookie on your computer when you are browsing the web and visit a site using DoubleClick advertising (including some Google AdSense advertisements). This cookie is used to serve ads specific to you and your interests (”interest based targeting”). The ads served will be targeted based on your previous browsing history (For example, if you have been viewing sites about visiting Las Vegas, you may see Las Vegas hotel advertisements when viewing a non-related site, such as on a site about hockey). DART uses “non personally identifiable information”. It does NOT track personal information about you, such as your name, email address, physical address, telephone number, social security numbers, bank account numbers or credit card numbers. You can opt-out of this ad serving on all sites using this advertising by visiting http://www.doubleclick.com/privacy/dart_adserving.aspx

You can choose to disable or selectively turn off our cookies or third-party cookies in your browser settings, or by managing preferences in programs such as Norton Internet Security. However, this can affect how you are able to interact with our site as well as other websites. This could include the inability to login to services or programs, such as logging into forums or accounts.

Deleting cookies does not mean you are permanently opted out of any advertising program. Unless you have settings that disallow cookies, the next time you visit a site running the advertisements, a new cookie will be added.
