Dogs' Heart Worm, Fleas and other Parasites

By Owen Jones

Heart worm, fleas and other parasites in dogs need to be destroyed by using the appropriate medication on them. Loads of products have come onto the market to protect dogs from heart worms, fleas and other parasites like hook worms, whip worms, round worms, lice, ticks etc.

Of the heart worms, fleas and other parasites, fleas can produce a super-sensitive reaction in the affected animal. Animals infested with fleas scratch their bodies very vigorously. Frequently the scratching becomes so severe that the skin becomes super-sensitive and dermatitis occurs in the affected areas of skin.

The result of a serious flea infestation is often that your dog can not lie down for long or sleep properly due to the persistent flea bites. Therefore, the animal looks as if has some severe skin disease. If the your dog is not properly attended to for these flea bites, there could be a secondary bacterial attack in these sites and there may even be a bad smell coming from the affected area of the animal's skin.

You need to observe your dog closely in order prevent a serious infestation. It is essential to prevent such an outbreak as they are extremely distressing to dogs. Similarly, the skin of the animal needs to be checked regularly for the presence of ticks and lice. In order to do this properly, you need to look at the dog's skin by separating the dog's hairs. The easiest way to do this is by slowly back-combing or ruffling the dog's hair.

Often, if your pet is anaemic, and he is not infested with fleas, you need to rule out hookworm. Symptoms of hookworm are anaemia, loose stools and a pot belly. The dog's owner may recognize these symptoms themselves, however, to be honest, the dog needs to undergo a routine health examination at the vet's involving faecal and hematological examinations.

There are many commercial products available on the market, some of which are effective for dealing with all these conditions in a single dose. Drugs like ivermectin are highly efficacious and are obtainable in injection, oral and solution forms. The latter should be applied directly on the dog's skin. These drugs can induce the prevention of these conditions too.

So, the best strategy to follow is to keep a sharp eye on your dog. This can most easily be done at bath time and when you are grooming him. You can use an anti-flea and anti-tick shampoo, which will keep these pests under control, if used regularly. Couple this with regular grooming with a lice comb and the use of a flea collar should keep your pet tick, lice, and flea free. - 30195

How to Find Bedbugs in the Mattress

By Renee Garcia

Do you know where bedbugs live? I am sure that you already know the answer just by the name of these insects. Yes, bedbugs live in the mattress or sofa " in places that you usually lie down.

How will you know if you have bedbugs? The first manifestation of bedbugs is their bite marks. If you find bite marks in the morning, check if these are from bedbugs.

Bedbug bites can be flat or raised lesions that are pink or red in color. The bites form a linear pattern which is typical of bedbug bites. The pattern is caused by any disruption while the bedbug is feeding. The food of bedbugs is the blood of humans and other warm-blooded animals.

Bedbug bites cannot cause any disease. But the bites can cause discomfort from burning and itching. To relieve itching and burning, topical corticosteroids are prescribed. These can also make the bite marks disappear fast.

If the bite marks are itchy, stop yourself from scratching because this will cause scarring. Antihistamines and systemic corticosteroids are also used to treat the burning sensation and itchiness. But these medicines are not helpful in making the bite marks disappear faster.

If you are sure that bedbugs are the culprits, check the mattress first. Inspect your mattress for any crack or crevice. Look for brown and red spots as well. The brown spots are from feces of the bedbugs. The red spots are from blood of crushed bedbugs.

Because the mattress is the preferred habitat of bedbugs, you must also inspect anything that it is close to it. Inspect the walls, floors, bed frames or posts as well. If only the mattress is infested, you can spray bedbug insecticides on the mattress.

After treating the mattress with insecticides, seal the mattress inside a mattress cover. The mattress cover will act as a barrier between the bedbugs and you. The bedbugs will no longer bite you. In 6 months, the bedbugs will die because of starvation. - 30195

Treating Bedbugs

By Renee Garcia

Bedbug treatment can be done by a professional exterminator. If you do not want to do it yourself, you can always contact one. But if you believe that you can do it, there are many methods to choose from.

Extreme heat is an effective bedbug treatment. First, scrub and vacuum each surface of the infested mattress or furniture. Seal the vacuum bag in a plastic container. This will stop any transfer of bedbugs.

Exposing the mattress or furniture under the sun can kill bedbugs. Leave them there for hours. And make sure to inspect for bedbugs before bringing them back inside your house.

Diatomaceous soil is also used to kill bedbugs. This soil is composed of single-celled algae. The soils jagged edges can cut through a bedbugs body. The soil cannot harm you or any pet because its particles are too small. Scatter the soil in the infested area and on infested furniture. Leave the soil there for a day or two. Then, you can vacuum to remove the soil.

Bedbugs can also be killed through steam cleaning. The only problem with this method is that not all surfaces can withstand steam cleaning. Therefore, you must be very sure that the furniture will not be destroyed if you choose to use this method.

Bedbug insecticides are also effective. These can be bought either in sprays or in dust form. You can even buy insecticides that are less toxic and eco-friendly. In buying insecticides, just be sure that you get one designed to kill bedbugs. Before application, be sure to read the product label and instructions. Also remember that insecticides must be handled with care at all times.

If you only found bedbugs in your mattress, use a mattress cover to kill the bedbugs. The mattress cover will seal the bedbugs inside. The insects will no longer be able to bite you because of the cover. Thus, they will die of hunger. In 6 months, bedbugs will die.

All these methods have been proven effective in killing bedbugs. Choose one to get rid of the bedbug infestation in your home. - 30195

Unusual Uses for the Indoor Bug Zapper

By Owen Jones

I don't know whether you have ever used a handheld, indoor bug zapper, but I think that they are wonderful. I'm talking about the handheld kind that looks like a child?s plastic, toy tennis racquet. They come in two basic kinds. I prefer the rechargeable bug zapper, because batteries end up up costing more than the indoor bug zapper itself, although you could always buy rechargeable batteries, but then they are high-priced as well.

My wife and I like to pass time in the garden. We meet friends there, lunch there and generally loaf about outside, as do most people about here, when they are not working. What's more, it's much cooler outside than inside. A comfy chair, some snacks, a cool drink and a book or a buddy and life does not get much better. In fact, it?s idyllic.

That is until about six or seven o'clock when the first squadron of mosquitoes have judged that the sun's rays have lost enough strength that they will not evaporate and they come out looking for blood. Some evenings are worse than others, of course. Normally, the mosquitoes are pretty bearable, especially seeing as I have discovered the indoor bug zapper. (I don't know why it is called an 'indoor bug zapper', it is equally as effective outdoors as in).

It's not that I want to kill things, but I find it difficult to have sympathy for mosquitoes. Nevertheless, I do get a certain amount of enjoyment from seeing and hearing mosquitoes and other bugs literally blow up with a flash and a spark as they come into contact with the electric and ground wires of the indoor bug zapper. These electric bug zappers are capable of packing quite a charge, especially if the batteries are new or the pack is wholly charged.

The other day, I found a new use for my handheld, indoor bug zapper. I'll tell you how it came about. I was in the garden, as normal, and my bug zapper was close at hand as the first squadron of mosquitoes was expected. I had my book in one hand and the bug zapper on my knees, when my wife asked me to go to the store for her. No problem, therefore, I set off on the five minute walk.

I was half-way there when I realized that I had the indoor bug zapper in my hand, but it was not worth taking it home and beginning the journey again. Anyway, on my return trip, I had my small bag of groceries in one hand and the indoor bug zapper in the other, when a local tyrant of a dog came running out of a garden right for me. This has occurred often and, although he has never bitten me yet, it is quite intimidating. He stood there glaring at me with teeth bared and his 'pack' of sundry neighborhood pals came out to surround me and join in.

I don't really know what the best course of action is in this situation. I have tried holding my ground, but the intimidation just goes on and I have tried to keep walking, but he gets worryingly close by on occasion. This time, I unexpectedly lashed out with the indoor bug zapper and just caught him on the snout. Well, I'm not sure whether it hurt him, it did not seem to too much, but it gave him a very nasty shock in more ways than one, I can tell you! He leapt about four feet into the air as if he were on a pogo stick and then ran for all he was worth with all his pals following him. It was very gratifying after six months of aggravation from this dog.

Anyway, I don't take my indoor bug zapper everywhere with me, but I will in future, if any more local dogs bother me. I know it works a treat. I have seen that one since, but he keeps far away from me and doesn't utter a sound. I think I would take my indoor bug zapper with me, if I were wandering in an unknown part of town or the park nevertheless. - 30195

Protecting Your House From Damages That Carpenter Ants May Cause

By Clark Harrington

Chippie Ants are social and adaptive creatures. For this, they can be considered as one of the insects that need persistent bug elimination attention. For humans, carpenter Ants are a bother. They create colonies inside houses and buildings and destroy structures and properties.

Total extermination of a whole ant population in an area affected of the house could be a plausibly impossible job.

That's why controlling and managing the population of these pests are more likely to be done than totally wiping them out of the area. First and foremost, prevent the carpenter Ants from entering into the house by sealing off all possible entrances. These can come in the shape of holes in the walls, cracks and tiny openings. Cut off branches and limbs of trees that come in contact with the house. These act as paths for them to move from their colonies in nearby tree stumps and barks.

However, when the ants have recently entered the home and have established colonies in many areas of the house, many things can still be done to manage their population. Eliminate all food sources. Keep food leftovers in tightly sealed boxes to get round this type of insect from scouting them and leading other fellow wood worker Ants into the food. Better yet, place food in the refrigerator to both forestall ants from taking them and to keep the food fresh and palatable. Wipe counter tops and sweep kitchen floors continually. Remove food crumbs and stains in the table, drawers and food cabinets.

Erase the scent trails of worker ants. Wipe the trail with a sponge of soapy water, as water alone isn't enough to fully take away the smell.

Start wiping from the food source and toward the colony or nest of the chippie Ants or as near to that as possible. - 30195

Do You Have a Bedbug Infestation?

By Renee Garcia

Do you know how a bedbug infestation starts? There are many possible ways with which bedbugs can enter your homes. For instance, you could have stayed in a hotel that is infested with bedbugs. And because you did not know this, the bedbugs could enter your house through your luggage.

Another way of getting bedbugs into your house is by buying used clothing or furniture. Also, if you live in a multi-unit apartment, building, or condominium, bedbugs can get from one place to the other through pets. It only takes getting in contact with these insects. Bedbugs can hitch a ride on your clothes or your shoelaces.

You must be aware whether you have a bedbug infestation or not. Bedbug bites are the first sign of infestation. These bite marks can be raised or flat lesions that are pinkish to red in color. Bedbug bites are easily identified because of their linear pattern.

A burning sensation and itchiness can be caused by the bedbug bites. To treat these, antihistamines or systemic corticosteroids are prescribed. And if you want the bedbug bites to disappear, topical corticosteroids are applied. It is advised not to scratch the lesions as this will cause scarring.

Once you have established that what you have are bedbug bites, finding the insects is the next step in determining bedbug infestation. You can begin with the mattress or sofa as these are the most preferred habitats of bedbugs.

Look for cracks or holes in the mattress or sofa. Also inspect for brown or red spots. The brown spots are the fecal matter of bedbugs. While the red spots are from blood of the crushed insects. If you see these signs, you definitely have a bedbug infestation.

How do bedbugs look like? The adult forms of these insects are wingless and reddish-brown. Adult bedbugs have flat oval bodies with a banded look because of the microscopic hairs. On the other hand, nymphs are lighter in color and translucent.

Now you know that you have a bedbug infestation. Call an exterminator to get rid of them. - 30195
