By Renee Garcia

Do you know where bedbugs live? I am sure that you already know the answer just by the name of these insects. Yes, bedbugs live in the mattress or sofa " in places that you usually lie down.

How will you know if you have bedbugs? The first manifestation of bedbugs is their bite marks. If you find bite marks in the morning, check if these are from bedbugs.

Bedbug bites can be flat or raised lesions that are pink or red in color. The bites form a linear pattern which is typical of bedbug bites. The pattern is caused by any disruption while the bedbug is feeding. The food of bedbugs is the blood of humans and other warm-blooded animals.

Bedbug bites cannot cause any disease. But the bites can cause discomfort from burning and itching. To relieve itching and burning, topical corticosteroids are prescribed. These can also make the bite marks disappear fast.

If the bite marks are itchy, stop yourself from scratching because this will cause scarring. Antihistamines and systemic corticosteroids are also used to treat the burning sensation and itchiness. But these medicines are not helpful in making the bite marks disappear faster.

If you are sure that bedbugs are the culprits, check the mattress first. Inspect your mattress for any crack or crevice. Look for brown and red spots as well. The brown spots are from feces of the bedbugs. The red spots are from blood of crushed bedbugs.

Because the mattress is the preferred habitat of bedbugs, you must also inspect anything that it is close to it. Inspect the walls, floors, bed frames or posts as well. If only the mattress is infested, you can spray bedbug insecticides on the mattress.

After treating the mattress with insecticides, seal the mattress inside a mattress cover. The mattress cover will act as a barrier between the bedbugs and you. The bedbugs will no longer bite you. In 6 months, the bedbugs will die because of starvation. - 30195
